You can disable the installation of this search bar, by making the related changes in the Advanced tab of the installation window. This tab is present on the majority of installers of free software if it is bundled with other programs.

Ads on the websites have a much easier model: after clicking on the ad, your Chrome will start downloading the file, where the adware is hidden. Of course, you may cancel the downloading, or avoid launching the file, but when you are lured by the attractive offer on the promotion, you will likely open this file.
